Here are two substitutions you can try -- you're bound to have some of these ingredients in your kitchen. I always keep this info handy, as a whole carton of buttermilk goes bad before I can use it all.
Combine one cup of milk (or soy milk) plus one tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar, and allow to stand for ten minutes
OR Combine one cup of milk plus two teaspoons cream of tartar, and allow to stand for ten minutes

Banana Nut Bread 1/4 c butter, softened 2 1/4 c flour 3/4 c sugar 1 tsp cinnamon 2 eggs 3/4 tsp baking soda 2 medium mashed bananas 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 c sour cream 1/2 c chopped walnuts 1. In a lg bowl, cream the butter and sugar til light and fluffy. Add eggs and beat well. 2. Mix in bananas and sour cream. In separate small bowl, combuine flour, cinnamon, baking soda, and salt. Stir into the banana mixture til moistenend. Fold in nuts. 3. Spoon into 8x4x2" loaf pan. Bake at 350 for 1 hr. Cool for 10 min., then remove loaf from pan onto a wire rack to finish cooling.

I have used the vinegar version...works fine!
Buttermilk: 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or white vinegar plus enough milk to make 1 cup equals 1 cup of buttermilk.
