Hi sweething822. The King James version of the Bible was translated from the earliest copies of Hebrew and Greek scripture and has the most accurate translation of ancient scriptures. The New King James version of the Bible is a little easier to read, and is quite accruate.
Stay away from any Bible that has books other than the New Testament and the Old Testament. When God was finished with the New Testament he was done sending Divine Revelation, and He tells us so in Revelation 22:18-19:
"I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book. 19 And if anyone takes words away from this book of prophecy, God will take away from him his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book."

my first bible was a new age translation it was simply to read and only had the new testiment
but in time i found a old testiment kg and read the old testiment
they didnt gell ,that i thought i knew from the new age version wasnt in the old
then i read the new testiment again that came in the bi-ble meaning two books
and understood more i feel because i read the new age version first ,even though it misrepresented the true meaning of the new testiment in the king james
so in short if you want to know jesus a new age version will do it
but you want the whole story the bible is a must
in the end i also read a few others and found the catholic has more referancees
extra books
though there have been edits there as well
so keep it simple read about jesus first
no doudt others will have thier own preferences
any version of the new test should give you a strarting point.
but it dosnt come together till you read the old tests
psalms is a good read ,wisdom is great
the first few chapters of genisis and exodus is a must read
job is confusing till you really get it
keep it simple
enjoy apparently the whole book can be read out loud in a bit over a day
it just seems to take more than 24 hours
just read a chapter at a sitting you get through it all in no time.
but really what was wrong with your old version that you feel you need a new one?
they all pretty much are the same
and i have compaired them

I highly recommend the NIV Study Bible (not the TNIV). It has been my personal favorite for about 15 years. The next best that's easy to read is the New Living Translation (2004). Then there is the HCSB, and the Ryrie Study Bible comes in NIV, NASB, and KJV. I don't really recommend the KJV unless that is what is used in your church.
A "Study" Bible would be better that a "devotional" Bible. you can always find devotionals as a supplement. A good Study Bible is hard to beat.

The most complete and accurate translation is the Douay Rheims bible, but it can be difficult reading. The New American Bible is also a very good translation in modern English. The most importnat thing is to get a Bible and start reading.

The devotional Bible is really good, so are many of the study bibles that are out there. Your main concern should be the version because different versions are good for different things. If you go to your local Christian Book Store, the people there should be able to assist you. Your pastor at your church should be able to do the same.

Go for a good book on science or philosophy. Don't by a bible. I recently read a good book called "The End of Faith" by Sam Harris. I suggest you read that. You could also try Richard Dawkins' "The God Delusion" or his earlier work "The Selfish Gene" both are excellent books that will help you understand the universe better than any bible ever could.

THe King James Version is the best. Its the purest in form. THe others such as you mentioned are often INTERPRETED by someone . Not good. Let the spirit intepret for you.
Try the Book of Mormon too. It is another testament of Jesus Christ and goes along with the Bible. I have read it like 15 times.
