In season, locally grown tomatoes of any variety are usually the best & juiciest, but if you're buying in winter or don't have access to homegrown tomatoes, Romas are more dependable for decent flavor & texture. I'm not impressed with the "vine-ripened" that are available off season in the store, they're still not up to par.

I prefer the ones that are labeled, VINE RIPENED, they are more flavorful. Romas are great in sauces, I actually prefer one right out of the garden, there is no tomato that tastes like the fresh ones out of the garden.
Grape tomatoes or cherry tomatoes can be added to the salad without slicing, or you can cut them in half. They give the salad a good flavor.

for salads, the big round ones are preferable.. especially the ones that say "vine ripened", or better yet, the ones you grow in your garden and that are big and round and delectable! The best way to select a tomato is by the smell. Hold the tomato gently in your hand and bring it to your nose, and sniff, get some of that distinctive tomato scent.. mmmmm...I love the ones that are big and round and oh so juicy, I like to eat them alone, just with a sprinkle of oil and vinegar on them. The Roma ones are good too, don't get me wrong, but they are the wrong size and shape for salad and they are better for making into sauce. I'm going to eat a tomato right now.

Roma or plum tomatoes sliced into little pieces...I've never cared for the big ones for some reason. My mom puts the little ones (cherry tomatoes?) in salads whole.

Hanover tomatos are awesome, but I don't think you can get them outside of the Richmond area. Beefeaters are tasty and have a nice texture. Romas are great in salads because they slice up into a perfect size.

Roma tomatoes are intended for SAUCES although you can slice them and put them into a salad if you choose to.

roma tomatoes are basically used for sauces as the are not very tender.....i would prefer a large vine ripped tomatoes that has a lot of juice and sweet and tender...but romas have been used in salads where they marinate for a period of time the italians used them frequently....

Roma's are meatier, less juice to water down dressings and such, and have fewer and smaller seeds, with a sharper tangier taste than the larger slicing tomatoes.I like them by themselves as an early summer salad.
