Are they equally effective, or will one give me better results than the other?

I'm assuming you're not trying to get big like Arnold; I would say go for the machines. They are easier to use because they force you to have good form.

The machines generally target certain areas. Free weights combine several muscle groups. For balance, and all around total workout, use free weights. If you are trying to target a certain area, use the machines.

It depends on whether or not you are trying to tone up or bulk up. If you are simply toning, then machines are a much better choice. If you are trying to create bulk, then free weights would be the smarter choice.

I have read several time in Self and Shape that free weights are better.....but something is better than nothing.
