It may be due to something other than the pepto-bismol that is causing your stool to be black, although this medication can do that. The most common reason for black stool is bleeding somewhere in the GI tract. I'm an RN and suggest that you see your physician right away and have a stool specimen checked for occult (hidden) blood. Then further evaluation can be done if required. You do not say the reason behind drinking half-a-bottle of pepto-bismol but if it was for pain then internal bleeding is a possibility that should be ruled out. Good luck to you.

Because is contains Bismuth. Also indicates that it is working. First time I saw that, I freaked.
