A lot of people I know have these dining rooms that they never use. They look stuffy, like if you moved one little thing, lights would start flashing and the alarm would go off. Why do people have these? I would understand better if they were of use, but these are not. They have a dining room they do use, and then they have the stuffy looking one. I guess they feel like they have to put it there, or they would have an extra room, but whatever.

a dining room is nice when you are having special people over for dinner and you don't want to eat in the kitchen. or b-days, Christmas, Easter ,etc....................But, ur right usually it's a dust collector............As my Mom used to say .. It's for company..

In my parents home the dining room was where we ate all our meals as the kitchen was small, more for breakfasts when not everyone was going to sit down together. My friends houses were similare where I grew up.
It seems dining rooms are used less often given that houses seem to be larger n ow. I use mine for special occasions and holidays and the large table has been useful as a buffet table or for appetizers when we have a cocktail party. I have an area called the 'butlers pantry' between my kitchen and dining room. We can use it as a wine bar or to keep plates and dishes for use in either room. I am lucky in that I have huge kitchen and now have a table that seats 8. I am seriously considering converting our dining room into a den/office area as it is so close to the kitchen.

I have a formal dining area at one end of my living room. I also have a kitchen eating area adjacent to my family room. I like the flexibility of having both. For dinner parties of 8 or more, I need the dinining room space, and for larger gatherings -- like Christmas parties, we're able to add even extra seating in the family and living rooms which is nice. And sometimes, when it's just my husband and me (our kids are in college), I like having a nice dinner in the dining room without having to see the dirty dishes on the counter.

We're in our 5th home and none have had a dining room. Our 4th home; the people were selling because it had no dining room...but clearly I agree with you. I say for the people who want all that hoopla; the fine china, and silver, and crystal kinda life--- well good for them. I'd rather make reservations then dinner.

Who knows, some people have big fixations on things that are just for looks.
We have a dining room that is connected in a L-shape to our kitchen that we use daily.
