Jesus said to the thief on the cross who had just acknowledged Jesus as Lord, "Today you will be with me in Paradise." (Luke 23:43) Jesus did not mention anything about hanging out for a while and checking on things here in the world and then catching a ride on to Paradise.
And as I said before, "To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord." (2 Corinthians 5:8) So, this means that the spirit is not roaming around anywhere other than perhaps right in front of the Lord.
I would be particularly careful if you suspect you are being 'visited' by someone. You are in a very vulnerable place right now and it would not be unlike the enemy to try and steer you in a direction to believe un-truths about the Bible and God's design.
Pray for God to comfort you and guide you and He will show you great and many things IN HIS TIME and AS YOU ARE READY TO RECEIVE THEM. Let Him teach you through His word which is living and breathing and does not return void [Is never read or spoken without serving God's purpose].

Well, no one living knows for sure unless they have this special sight. I do not, but having been with people when they have passed on I would say that the length of time they stay behind has to do with how they died, what unfinished business there might be, and their overall spiritual development.

Absolutely Not in Ecc9:5,10 it says that the living are conscious that they will die but as for the dead they are conscious of nothing at all ( they are dead) and await a resurection also Ezekiel 18:4 sheds some more light on this read it Gorbalizer

The spirit/soul of departed mortals sleep... Those of The Church, to await The Call of Christ at The Rapture... those who have rejected God will awaken to the judgment of the lost... The souls of the depated do not "linger" or return... any such manifestation is that of an evil spirit or demon impersonating the departed.

As far as I know, there is no evidence to support it. But I can say this much: When I die, if paradise is laid out in front of me, I am not going to wait around to see that everyone is okay. I'm going to rush to paradise. I have faith that God will make sure everyone is okay. I know that when my dad died, God made sure I was okay. Peace.

I don't think so. Why would they continue to stay on the physical plane, when they could simply move on, meet other loved ones, and still check in on their family that haven't passed on yet.
