You need to get a copy of "Red Tent". It tells you everything. Back in the medieval days women, during menstruation, would stay in their own separate tent. They would sit on a bail of hay until the finish menstruating. Girls who menstruated for the first time would take a special drink to make them drowsy and they would lay the girl in the farmers field. This would make their crop prosperous. Cloth towels and frequent washing. then came sanitary pads which worked the same but were disposal.
