I really don't want to go to public high school and I do have singing talent, I'm in a singing group you had to audition for in school. I'm not sure if I'm good enough for a performing arts school though.. how do I know if I'm good enough?

First of all, don't worry about embarrassing yourself. I've been to many auditions with my daughter and all the person who is judging says is "Good" or "Thank You". Then they'll tell you "yes" or "no". That's it. No one is going to make fun of you. Most of the time, at schools, they'll take a small group into a separate room and have each person sing for about one minute. Then after everyone is done they'll either give you a "yes" or "no" right there, or inform you later on through mail. Second, I promise you everyone trying out for the school will be nervous. You won't be alone on that one. The best way to overcome this is through practice. Practice singing in front of people, and not just family members. Third, make sure you know exactly what kind of song is required for the audition. I doubt very much they'll want you to sing Adele. Most are looking for Broadway tunes or classical. Don't be caught unprepared. Read the audition rules and stick to them. I saw a girl who started singing a Beyonce song and they stopped her two seconds into it. She was told she doesn't know how to follow rules and was sent home. (A little harsh, I thought.) Finally, above all else, sing with passion. Your audience wants to be entertained. If you just stand there and sing every note on key but you look like a robot, nobody's going to want to look or listen to you. When you make eye contact, move around a bit, show that you really mean the words you are singing, even though it looks ridiculous when you look at yourself in the mirror, THAT'S what entertainment is about. Good Luck.

I'm sorry; this will be a very cut and dry answer...if you aren't sure, you probably aren't. You have to be really good to do it for a living, and you'd know it if you were really good. Although there are lots of people who think they're really good who aren't...that's the way it tends to go, honestly.

"Or is this just avoiding the hard work of school?" This comment is ridiculou, btw. A music major is much harder that most. Get ready for course overload waivers! And practices, performances, etc. on top of that.

Audition and see if you get selected for the Performing Arts School. You won't know unless you try.

Good luck.

Hi. I have a masters in vocal performance. If you don't have a qualified private teacher that can direct you in perf. and auditioning tech. then now is the time to get one. You need one to guide you and let you know when you are ready. Mostly, if you can't imagine doing anything else, then that's where you belong!Break many future legs, JF

You are good enough.

Say it with me, "I am good enough."

Confidence is just as important as talent when auditioning for a school. I've been teaching at a performing arts college for almost 20 years .... trust me!

"I am good enough."

There is never any harm in tring. Being denied is part of being a musician, and it will help you realize, there is always someone better than you, but u can find your own home/place to be.

Is singing how you really want to spend your life though?
Or is this just avoiding the hard work of school?
If singing is what you love, practice, study hard, be prepared and do your best. And don't be afraid to fall flat on your face. Expect to pick yourself up a few times.
