I have a Pomeranian that goes everywhere w/ me. He goes to work w/ me, to my friends house, vacations, etc. He sits in my passenger seat or sleeps in the back seat of my car the whole trip. He is not put in a crate during the ride. He makes an excellant travel partner for me. I also have 2 big dogs, a Rottweiler and a Lab. They also are never crated when we go somewhere. They sit in the back seat of my truck and sleep the whole time.

Why can't you take your current dog w/ you?? If you have to give him away because you can't travel w/ him, why are you replacing him w/ another? Just teach him how to travel and keep him.

I love miniature schnauzers. They are usually around 12-15lbs by the breed standard, but they do come smaller. They have an excellent temperament and don't shed like most other dogs...great for people like me with numerous allergies. My mom has a male miniature schnauzer he hops in the backseat on every trip. When he has to potty, we stop at rest area, let him handle his bizness and hit the road again. The female schnauzer I had did the same thing, except she liked to sleep on her own special pillow. She slept on my lap when it really dark and she got scared. I never crated them on a road trip.

My main suggestion is to make sure you have a dog that likes to travel. Some don't like it at all.

Don't put a dog through that. It's very hard on them. Imagine if you had to be stuck in a very small cage for hours on end. Would you like it? If you do get a pet, leave them in a kennel or have someone look after it while you're away.

Oh how sad. I have a Border Collie and he goes everywhere with me. Are you sure you can't take your dog?
There are lots of small dogs, but not chihuahuas - they don't travel well [never mind Paris Hilton] and they are easily injured. Schnauzers are small, quite hardy and are great travellers.

My sister has a little Yorkshire Terrier that travels with her.
He even sits in a doggie seat belt while traveling, and enjoys every minute of it!!

I'm a sucker for poodles or poodle mixes. They are tough and can travel well - Even Jack Kerouak traveled with a poodle.
