Every seen the movie "Cocktail", with Tom Cruise?? There's a line in that movie that fits this question....and that is...
"Things always end badly, otherwise they wouldn't end."
If you don't want to hurt his feelings, just be polite, and honest. There is no need to rub salt into what will already be a bitter experience. It might take time, but he'll get over it.

well you can either pack up your things leave a note and go when he is not there or you can be the stronger person and tell him your situation that you don't want to be with him any more either way his feelings are going to be hurt but hay life gose on

Basically... you make him dump you.
Do things that'll really bug him... but pretend not to notice.
I'm sure there are countless pet-peeves he hasn't directly told you about that you can take advantage of...
... And then again, if he still decides to stick by you despite your best efforts, you might end up respecting him more for it, if thats worth anything.
