I am truly sorry for your loss, and there are many Scriptures that help us to see what happens to us when we die.
Animals and people experience the same thing as stated at Ecclesiates 3:19,20--"For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity. All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again."
Psalm 146:4--"His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish."
Eccl 9:5--"For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten." (This means that people still living cannot help those who die, they cannot reward them and eventually the memory of those who die are forgotten. They are not forgotten by God though for he holds all those who die in his memory and soon all will be resurrected back to life. The fact that we do not dwell on those who die is helpful so that death is not something thought about constantly, for if that were to happen, who could stand the pain of losing loved ones? God helps us to cope with our sadness this way. )
Eccl 9:10--"Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest."(This also helps us to see that the dead feel neither pain nor pleasure)
Death is likened to being asleep. Psalm 13:3--"Consider and hear me, O LORD my God: lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death." Because of Jesus sacrificing his life for us, death is a temporary condition and those who are now sleeping in death will be brought back to life here on earth. Jesus himself will do this-- "I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself. And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man. "Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out—"(John 5:25-29) NIV
I hope this helps you to see what the Bible teaches us regarding death.

When we die we enter the after life or Eternity. There are one of two places we can go and it's not just biblical it's REAL and it's historical. Even non godly religions believe in some type of after life. There's Heaven if you know God and serve Him in your life not by force but by your free will and free choice to serve Him and love him as He loves you even more. Or there's Hell for those who not necessarily didn't know God but more or less refused to. I'll not get into all the details. I pray your mother knew the LORD and she's in a much better place. Get to know God and some day you will reunite with her. I know you will. God bless you and so sorry for your loss.

The spirit returns to God who "breathed" it into us. The body returns to the earth, to the grave(hell) and "sleeps" until God resurrects it by again "breathing" our spirit back into us. We do not go to heaven when we die. John 3:13, the words of Christ, says: "And no man has ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, the Son of man which is in heaven." If we believe in Christ, doesn't that mean we believe what He Himself said in His own words?

Solomon said your "spirit [breath] shall return unto God who gave it." (Ecclesiastes 12:7) But what you're really wondering is, "what 's she doing now," right? Solomon also said, "the living know that they shall die, but the dead know not any thing." Ecclesiastes 9:3 No worries! No more troubles for her! Like Jesus said about Lazarus, "Our friend Lazarus sleepeth." (John 11:11) "Then said Jesus unto them plainly, 'Lazarus is dead.'" (John 11:14)

But Jesus raised up Lazarus! And He promised to come back and raise up all who want to be with Him and take them where He is. That's what they call "the blessed hope." Isaiah 26:19 talks about that day: "Thy dead men shall live... Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust! ...and the earth shall cast out the dead." Jesus said, "Let not your heart be troubled....I will come again and receive you unto myself..." John 14:1-3 He says when that will be: when we can all go Together! (1 Thessalonians 4:16,17) "And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure. " 1 John 3:3

Your Mom's not dancing in heaven without you! ("The dead praise not the Lord." Psalms 115:17) Nor is she screaming in hell. ("For, behold, the day Cometh that shall burn as an oven, ...and all that do wickedly shall be stubble: Malachi 4:1) She is in God's keeping ("Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints." Psalms 116:15), but He's grieving with you, missing her smile, too, until the day when "He will swallow up death in victory. And the Lord God will wipe away tears from off all faces...for the Lord hath spoken it. Isaiah 25:8

IF your mother was a follower of Jesus Christ, she is absent from the body and present with the Lord.

If she did not believe, there are two lines of thought from the bible, and I have not studied it yet to give you original words and text.

But one is that she is in Hell and the other is that she is sleeping until the final judgement where she will know that her name is not in the Lambs book of life and from there it appears that the lake of fire is the final destination. Either way, I do know that the bible states that she would be eternally separated from her creator and that this causes much sadness and heartache.

I also have lost my mother I often wandered the same thing. My sister called one evening saying my mother came to her and told her she was OK she was with her family and my father. I don't know if they are in heaven or just waiting on judgment day for all of us together . I do feel she is now at peace.

Well if she was a confirmed Pastafarian and was touched by His noodly appendage then she went to heaven to partake in the many wonders of the beer volcano and the giant stripper factory.

I can't wait till I get there!

I am sorry for your loss. The Bible tells us "To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord." May the Lord of Hosts grant you peace which surpasses all understanding in this, your great loss.

I'm sorry for your loss, but I believe that nothing happens, because there is no such thing as a spirit.

However, your mother still lives on in your memory, and the memory of those who knew her. Cherish it.
