I think it's just a case of being allowed to get it into bad habits as a child. The stress part may come later in life - when the habit is already well established

It's a habit disorder, your nails are easily accessible and you can consume yourself without too much discomfort and it feels good. it is easy to treat by using a form of therapy called habit reversal developed by a couple of blokes called Azrin & Nun in the 60s. ask you GP for referral for behaviour therapy.

I don't think it is a natural thing, I think the idea is put into our heads. Like, when I was younger, I never bited my nails, but once I heard, "Don't bite your nails, it's a bad habit," I began to think, "Hmm... I wonder what it's like to bite my nails." haha.

I think it is more of a habbit thing than stress. If you are stressed up, there are other things to do than biting nails.

Not sure, but I guess it's better than what my 2 year-old son does when he is frustrated....he bites his fingers or his hand...less painful I guess.

I think it is alot less painful that it would be biting your hand's.

I DONT,,my shrink does dont get me wrong she is a good shrink.
i have more of a taste for food..and i smake alot..i use to twirl my hair when it was long
