It's hard to say and no one really can tell you except from their own experiences. There is a difference depending on skill level, location, flat rate, hourly salary amount, how busy the shop is, types of vehicles, etc. I went to 2 tech schools and one of them was Mercedes Benz ELlTE Program for 4 months and I think my first year I only made about 45K at MB. European cars are tougher to work on IMO, but the hourly pay is usually higher because the labor rate is so much higher. The average salary in the shop was about 80K and several were over 100K. Now I own my own business and I'm doing much better.

Find something you are passionate about and pursue it. When you (I'm not saying you, but just in general) start worrying about whether it's going to make you money or how much it pays as the first priority, you are already at a disadvantage. I love working on cars and talking to people and so my customer base grew faster than I would have ever thought. Customer satisfaction is first priority to me and so far it's working out very well in the economic department.

RE:
How much do mechanics generally make in one year?

Median hourly earnings of automotive service technicians and mechanics, including commission, were $15.60 in May 2004. The middle 50 percent earned between $11.31 and $20.75 per hour. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $8.70, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $26.22 per hour. Median annual earnings in the industries employing the largest numbers of service technicians in May 2004 were as follows:

Local government$38,160
Automobile dealers38,060
Automotive repair and maintenance28,810
Gasoline stations28,030
Automotive parts, accessories, and tire stores27,180
Many experienced technicians employed by automobile dealers and independent repair shops receive a commission related to the labor cost charged to the customer. Under this method, weekly earnings depend on the amount of work completed. Employers frequently guarantee commissioned technicians a minimum weekly salary.

Some automotive service technicians are members of labor unions such as the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers; the International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America; the Sheet Metal Workers’ International Association; and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.

Not enough! They should get paid like a doctor-
if the patient dies they still get paid and if the car quits the mechanic eats it

We are grossly underpaid for the work we perform. A car is the second biggest investment yet no one wants to spend the money to fix it. Most mechanics make money only when they fix something. If you want a job making money, don't be a mechanic.
