I just adopted a chihuahua/pekingese mix from a shelter 6 days ago. Since then, he's been having mixed consistencies in his stool (ranging from yellowish, squirting diarrhea to brown loose diarrhea to dark brown/black solid stool-all in random order). On top of that, he's been VERY sleepy and lazy, always falling asleep rather than playing around. He also has no desire for his chew toys or biscuits. He also doesn't eat or drink much. I started feeding him canned food, and he eats a little bit of that. His nose is also runny (clear, watery) and he seems to be sneezing/coughing alot. Just a few days ago, he started vomiting thick, mucousy vomit with food (it was more like he coughed it up really hard, because it sprayed). I took him to the vet, who did some tests, but all came back negative. Nothing's changed with the antibiotics he's on. He's about 5 weeks old, and already received his first set of vaccinations. I don't know what's wrong with him? Will he get over it soon? Thanks!

Your pup is SO blessed to have found your home! He would have died alone and unloved, in the shelter..!
It sounds like he needs a boost to his immune system. I would advise you to contact Marina Zacharias..She is an Holistic practitioner, and can help you know what to do to enhance the immune system> http://www.naturalrearing.com/how_to_contact_us.htm
If you email her today, I'm betting you will have help by tomorrow..Just be as thorough as possible about your pup, the things it was tested for, etc..Consult is always free..I asked her for permission to post her info here, as she has helped me(and askers from this forum) many times..

Any shelter should have known better than to adopt a 5 wk old pup out to anyone in the first place,as that is too young for a pup to be on its own.Your pet is sleep and lazy because its sugar level is probably very low if it isn't eating or drinking very good. This pup evidently has coci, geardia,or intestinal worms causing the diarrhea and vomiting, also could have the beginning of the parvo virus. If diarrhea continues, take away all food and water and give it the non-flavored baby pediolyte, even if you have to force it down it with a dropper or syringe. You can also add about 1/3 teaspoon to the pediolyte ,some Clear Karo syrup, honey,or Nutra -Stat,which comes in a tube like tooth paste and can be purchased at any feed store or vet's clinic.Do this for about 24 hours and pup should be better, but it needs to have a fecal exam to determine what is causing the diarrhea and adminstered the corrct type of wormer,or meds for the problem. My pups all like the Little Ceasars puppy food in the little white trays and will eat it before anything else. Also like Boiled chicken puree in a blender with a small amount of the broth mixed into the meat.

awh at 5 weeks old he is still just a little bit of a guy. Did the shelter check him out healthwise when you took him? I sure hope so.
He is dealing with a new environment, new water, new food. Unsure of what is happening. He misses his mom and other sibblings. Everything in the world that made him feel safe is gone.
I would boil his water for twenty minutes, then let it cool and store in a jar. You don't have to do this forever. Just do it while he is adjusting to his new ssurroundings..
There is a condition called Kennel cough. Make sure that he doen't have that. Get a seond oppinion if he doesn't improve.
Spend time making him feel safe.

A return trip to the vet is in order considering the decreased appetite and inconsistent stool. Your dog could have a multitude of problems with dehydration beginning to contribute as well. Get some pedilyte solution for him to drink until you can get him to the veterinarian tomorrow morning first thing. He may be having an immune response to his shots or may have a serious infection that could be bacterial or viral. Keep him drinking, get some pedilyte in him, and make sure he stays warm (blankets and warm water bottles *NO heating pads!)
Good luck and keep going with the antibiotics til the vet says otherwise.

5 weeks old and received his firast vaccinations???? !!!!! A puppy that young should NOT have vaccinations!! Vaccinations should NOT be given to a puppy before it has completed his 7th week and preferably not until he is 8 weeks old.
Has he been tested for parvo? Even if he has he should be tested again...he also needs to be tested for canine influenza...If possible get a second opinion..this pup is seriously ill and in danger of dying if it doesn't receive the proper treatment very soon.
This puppy needs to be in a vet hospital on iv's and receiving medical care. He shouldn't be at home.

If it were me I would first think change of food - usually animals aren't taken from their moms until 6-8 weeks. So the food that you're feeding him might be too much for his little tummy. Then I would think that he picked up a cold of sorts. Take the little guy to another vet and call the shelter that you got him from. (Hopefully you researched the shelter before you purchased from them and were assured that they are on the up and up/clean/certified, etc.
But also, remember he is still a baby and babies sleep a lot. It sounds like he may just be too young yet...relax, make a couple more phone calls and give the little guy lots of love and cuddling. He may be scared too.

The symptoms sound like a very serious disease called parvo. Get another vet....fast. If it is parvo then it is almost always fatal. Also I would contact the shelter and see if they have had an outbreak of anything. Ask them for help as well. Whatever you do please get help as soon as possible. The poor pup can not last much longer in this condition. He is seriously ill.

Nothing's wrong with him. His nails just happen to have white spots. It's because his body produces melanin in differing amounts, and therefore the nails will have white and black parts. You may also notice as he gets older the nails turn one color or the other, but a few toes may be the opposite of what most of them are.

if the vet says there is nothing wrong, well, he's trained. i personally don't like the sound of it. firstly, it shouldn't be away from its mother till minimum6 weeks best 9. anytime a pup has sickness an diarrhea, it is best to vet him, they can de-hydrate very fast. the stool change is the change in diet an he's not settled yet. give him lactol, a puppy milk formula-warm, an put a couple of teaspoons of honey in the evening one, settles them down.

Hi Chum Chum, I don't like that he had yellowish and black stool. It could be the change in his food. This will give a pup or dog diarrhea. His nose being runny and vomiting this could be an allergy.Just watch your pet and give him healthy food and love him alot.
