Definitely not. I lived there for a number of years and travelled back and forth on my British passport with no trouble and no visa.

The Lonely Planet website states that most Western visitors can stay in Canada for up to 180 days on a tourist visa (part of the Schengen agreement possibly?) However, its always best to check with the Canadian embassy in Britain before you book a trip.

You can stay in Canada for six months without a visa. You can't work in that time but you are free to travel freely.

No, you do not need a visa up to six months.
You can not work, though. For that you would need a work visa. If you want to study you would need a student visa. For just a regular trip, you don't need one.

You always need a visa unless you want to waste hours having money wired to you or, taking the time to have your travelers checks rejected.
