I sold a car on ebay, accepted the deposit from paypal, but due to family circumstances, I cant sell the car. I contacted the person and told them I will refund the deposit promptly (waiting for it to hit my account so I can send it right back). The buyer already purchased plane tickets (we never discussed an exact day that she would come up and pick the car). Now she wants me to pay for the tickets. Is it my responsibility to do this?

They could take you to small claims court for damages, you broke the contract you entered into with them. It sounds like they live far enough away to make that troublesome for them to do.

So, do you have too? no, but you certainly should pay for one ticket if they can not be refunded. The second ticket was their choice.
