Squall is a torpedo which travels through the water in an envelope of gas and air thus not allowing the toredo to succumb to water resistance. This is called supercavitation. It allows the torpedo to travel at over 300 miles per hour. If launched at a carrier battle group the consequences could be terrible. Any thoughts?

wow interesting weapon, forced me to check it out, sounds hard to stop sure they have some counter measure, but this was designed as a counter measure, would be interesting to see the what they have done with it now with all the improvements in guidance systems, I cannot see anything stopping it .

The Shkval("squall") is a high-speed supercavitating rocket-propelled torpedo designed to be a rapid-reaction defense against U.S. submarines undetected by sonar. It can also be used as a countermeasure to an incoming torpedo, forcing the hostile projectile to abruptly change course and possibly break its guidance wires.
The solid-rocket propelled torpedo achieves a high velocity of 230 mph (386 kmh) by producing an envelope of supercavitating bubbles from its nose and skin, which coat the entire weapon surface in a thin layer of gas. This causes the metal skin of the weapon to avoid contact with the water, significantly reducing drag and friction.

The Shkval is fired from the standard 533-mm torpedo tube at a depth of up to 328 ft (100 m). The rocket-powered torpedo exits the tube at 50 knots (93 kmh) and then ignites the rocket motor, propelling the weapon to speeds four to five times faster than other conventional torpedoes. The weapon reportedly has an 80 percent kill probability at a range of 7,655 yd (7,000 m).

The torpedo is guided by an autopilot rather than by a homing head as on most torpedoes. The initial version was unguided. However, the Russians have indicated there is a homing version that starts at the higher speed but slows and enters a search mode.

Squall Torpedo

Sort of. The first layer of defense is that satellites can see subs, so the U.S. navy knows where every large ship is in the world. This happens to include cruise ships.

The second layer of defense is enemy's money. Russia is so poor it can't afford to pay the electric bill at some of their bases. Sea rations is one can of beans per day and they have to compute everything by hand because of the lack of computers. These torpedos are ment to be sold, but not many governments can afford the subs to use them. China is second in terms of military spending which is about $40 billion a year for their million man military. So basically one has to actually come up with an ememy to use this weapon system.

The third line of defense is the anti torpedo torpedo, decoys and jamming devices all of which can be set to autopilot though things like the SLAT system that Italy uses.

At the moment there is no defence against this weapons system. Its not new either, it first entered service with the soviet navy in1977. The new type 111 version can travel at 1000kph and has a range of 60miles, it renders the los angeles class useless. Awsome weapon truely revolutionary, the Americans have nothing remotley this advanced for sub warfare.

if they know about it im guessing by now they can stop it, but if the russians know the americans know about it and can stop it then they probably have another new toy.
really id imagine we are all very much in the dark as to what sort of new military tech is out there - must be some amazing stuff.

absolutely there is one thing u will never have to worry about and that is someone stopping a certain weapon there will always be a weakness for weapons and another thing the U.S. has unbelievable radar capabilities and they are more than likely to detect and exterminate any threat that their radar picks up.

it still has to hit something. there are plenty of decoy devices in service- of course no one will know which works better until a shooting war begins.
