I have been using Limewire, an excellent P2P file sharing network for MP3 files. It is far superior to sites like Kazaa, with which I had lots of problems. I assumed Limewire is legal, but am not certain. Anybody know for sure? Please only comment if you know.

No p2p or file sharing program is safe; you get loads of viruses and spyware(especially newly released ones) with them. Of course, you can use them if you have got a very good security, but there cannot be absolute security; so better stay away from it.
