I have to write an essay for school about Abraham & Isaac, etc, etc, etc. But......I can't seem to think of any flaws that Abraham is portrayed as having (I'm trying to say that he is portrayed as a hero b/c he does everything that God tells him to do, but that he also has flaws........ [so please help me think of a good, solid flaw that i can prove]

He was about to kill his son based on someone telling him to do so. Isn't that bad enough?

That's what we convicted people for in the Nuremburg Trials after they said, "But we were just following orders".

Judging by the hard life and meager existence most people went through those many, many years ago, I would say Abraham was a man of his times. That is, hard, durable, and nothing like how Hollywood would portray him. Abraham was simply a warlord.

He may have had a special calling in the overall dispensation of God's plan for mankind (leading up to Jesus), but Abrahm, Moses, David, Solomon, and all the rest were warlords. Especially David.

Shortcomings and flaws? *shrug* not difficult for you to figure out.

its hard because what ever flaw you could point out in what Abraham did their is always a logical rational answer. IE throwing out Hagar or almost killing Issac.

the one thing I would point out is his need to lie/trick the men about his status with Sarah being his wife. One could argue that that was a lack of faith. but then again one can agrue that he was doing what he could to keep safe

He told Pharaoh that Sarah was his sister to avoid being killed instead of relying on God's faith to get him through safely. Also, he laid w/ Hagar his servant instead of trusting that God would give him a son.

Abraham had a lack of faith when he had a child named Ishmael with his wife's servant.

He was too nice.
Really.
G-d had to instruct him to listen to his wife and throw out ishmael because abraham himself was simply too nice. even when it wasn't necessarily for the best. (luckily, a good soul mate helps us past our blind spots.)
