Need to feel loved (by the god).
Need to be free of fear (of death.)

I see religions as far more than that. However, from a purely psychological standpoint, they almost certainly fulfill the need to belong, as well as the need for positive reinforcement (or if you're in a serious cult, a masochistic need for negative reinforcement). They could perhaps even provide a replacement for botched familial relationships (father, mother, etc). The phrases "church family" and "church home" may not be accidental.

They fulfill the primal fear of any animal: Fear of death. People have the need to feel that their life isn't meaningless.

Famous people whose legacy outlive history only occur once in a few hundred years, for everyone else, religion promises them eternal life.

The need to know where we came from, for one. I have no such need. I figure all my questions will be answered after I cross over.

Father figure.
Shared identity.
Simplistic answers to complex questions.
Hope of avoiding one's impending mortality.
Assuaging grief over loss of loved ones.

the need to know what our purpose is and the need to feel secure by having a loving and caring god to watch over us an the need to know that when we die it isn't realy the end
