National Service was for 18 months when it was first introduced, then it was increased to 2 years. you were still liable for active service ( in a emergency) after you were demobbed up to the age of 45.

This depends on which country you are asking about. It also depends on the world situation, in Britain during the late '40's to early '60's the length was 12 months. EXCEPT right at the end when National service was abolished but the Regular Services found that they couldn't cope so the last National Servicemen served 18 months.

In the UK it was 2 years. We have not had national service here though since the late 50's or early 60's

1949 it was 18 mounths but in 1950 it was increased to 2 years when demobbed you had to attend T.A service for 3 years and then put on a list incase there was need for a recall of the armed forces

JOCKSPITE-yeh your right,bring it back-then we'll see if (some!) of these 17/20 year olds today have the backbone they think they have.I wonder,two things-how many people in this country would vote for the return of national service-and would the government/lawlords back it,and put it back on the statute books?just a thought!!

Initially it was for 12 months,but was increased to 2 years in 1950 at the start of the Korean war

Two years, you could be conscripted into any one of the three armed services but mostly into the army. It ended I think about 1958 and the youth of England haven't been the same since.

It was compulsory to sign up for two years, you went into the forces at the age of 18yrs and came out at 20 yrs
