It is proper etiquitte if the engagement is broken, the girl should return the ring. It is argued, however, that if the man breaks the engagement then the girl would not be required to return the ring if she did not want to. By the procedures of etiquitte this is false as well, in all cases the ring should be returned.
Its in very poor taste to be so spiteful or gold-diggin as to want to keep a reminder of a failed relationship don't you think?

Out of respect yes. An engagement ring is to represent the love between to people and honor a future marriage and if your no longer engaged why hold on to it. Give the ring back.

Yes. An engagement ring is not a gift, it is a symbol of love. The tradition of the wedding/engagement ring is the circle of love, because a circle never ends. In the situation where the love is gone, it's only proper to give it back to the person who bought it.

Personally I feel she should not wear the ring anymore, but the split couple really should decide what should be done with the ring. I can see it being ok for the girl to keep it as a memory if the couple still are very kind to each other and things ended well, but I can also see it being fair for the man to "repossess" the ring he bought. If I were in that situation I'd give it back to him so he can give it to his true soulmate.

Absolutely. The ring was a symbol that you were engaged and if you are no longer engaged, you should give the ring back. I consider that stealing if a girl keeps the ring.

If the girl called off the engagement, yes.
If the male does, no.
By California law. Unless cheating or abuse is in the break up, pretty much that is what I was told in my situation. I didn't have to give it back as it was not a purposal, but a gift as he never proposed to me.

If it happens to me, I'll return it or sell it on Ebay :)
There is no need of keeping an engagement ring if the engagement itself is off anyway, regardless who calls it off. Why keep a ring if the memory doesn't do you any good?

If the girl calls off the engagement then yes. If the engagement is called off by the guy then no, it is hers to keep and do with it as she pleases.

When one of my engagments broke off, I threw the ring off the cliffs near the Golden Gate Bridge into the ocean!!!
I had tried to pawn it, but its bad luck to resell an engagment ring, and I kept being offered like $60, and I thought for 60 bucks I'll just pitch this thing into the ocean!! hahahaha
A girlfriend of mine then went out to dinner, and had a nice night.

Yes I think she should. Even if it wasn't her who called it off, I still think that she should give back the ring. Why would she want to have the ring if the two of them are not together? It would be selfish to keep it for whatever reasons.
