The best way is to take it to the bank that is on the check. Tell them you want to cash the check. They can tell you right then if the money is available....if not, then they'll just hand you back the check. This will keep you from getting a 'returned check fee' from your own bank.

CASH IT!! There's no way to verify a personal check...here's why. Some banks will be able to "check funds" in an acct and all they can tell you is that the funds are there to cover the check.

Here's the catch...unless you cash the check at that moment...there's a 1001 things that can happen for that $$ to be gone in 60 seconds...you're out the cash and have the headache of trying to collect. Only bright side is that if someone bounces you a check...it's against the law, you'll win hands down in court...but...court sucks!

If you're worried they dont have the cash to cover...dont take it...meet them at their bank & collect!!!!! No checky....no dicey!!!

There should be a phone number on the check to call the bank. You can call that number and find out if there is money to cover the check. If you deposit the check in your account and the party who wrote the check doesn't have money in their account, your account gets slapped with fees as well. So contact the bank that is listed on the check first. In fact if it is a local bank, just walk in there, and cash it. They may charge a small fee, but hey it is better than what your bank would charge you if that personal check bounced, right?

You mean verify if there are funds available to cover the check? You would call the bank from which the check was drawn from.
