A Swiss man, looking for directions, pulls up at a bus stop where two Americans are waiting.
"Entschuldigung, koennen Sie Deutsch sprechen?" he asks. The two Americans just stare at him.
"Excusez-moi, parlez vous Francais?" he tries. The two continue to stare.
"Parlare Italiano?" No response.
"Hablan ustedes Espanol?" Still nothing.
Disgusted, the Swiss guy drives off. The first American turns to the second and says, "Y'know, maybe we should learn a foreign language."
"Why?" says the other. "That guy knew four languages and it didn't do him one bit of good."

ha ha, reminds me of a joke my dad used to tell me when I was a kid.
If you're trilingual or more, you're probably from a third world country, and you need three languages to communicate with the mix of people around you.
If you're bilingual you're probably from an industrialized nation, and even though all the people of your country speak one language, you still learn a second one to be a global citizen.
And if you're monolingual, you're American!
Lol, the sad thing is it's sooooo true!

That is rather funny. Back when I first went to South Korea (I pulled five tours of that country) a very articulate Korean gent I met spoke fluent English. We always conversed in English. Once we got caught in the Middle of a student demonstration (they are frequent in that country) and some of the leaders were really upset that Americans don't speak their language. So I asked my friend to tell them although I could not speak Korean I was bilingual. So they asked me to say something in a forgien language. And I said "Hable Espanol un pocito!!" And then I said "et tu brute". They never knew the difference and I still get a big kick out of telling that story.

Mmmm....sooooo true! I grew up in a third world country. So, naturally, I spoke 3 languages by the time I was 7. Then we came to America. I haven't spoken anything but English since I was 8. Until pretty recently I took up Spanish, but everyone speaks that, I guess.

LOL. LOL.
That's sad, though. A lot of Americans only speak English, and that not very well.
