It's called a vapor trail... all jet engine type of planes can make them.... When a plane zips through the sky, it creates its own low-pressure system above the wing. This lowers the temp and condenses water out of the air. If the plane's flying high enough and the circumstances are right, the trail of water vapor turns to ice crystals, which will persist for a while.

Those streaks that look like smoke are known as contrails. They are formed when the hot exhaust from the engines mix with the low pressure and low temperature in the air. Here is a really cool picture showing contrails - if you want to see more there are tons on www.airliners.net.

It's not smoke, it's water.
Contrails form when hot humid air from jet exhaust mixes with environmental air of low vapor pressure and low temperature.

those trails are condensation trails, air is taken into intake and compressed, then used to make a combution cycle while being superheated, then expelled and mixes with cooler more dense air.the visible effects are trails due to the temperature variant

Those are vapour trails left by the aircrafts engines.
The flights are most likely commercial, but some are military.

Both. It is the hot gasses in the upper atmosphere condensing at the engine tail.
