There is a good book on fasting by "Elmer L. Towns" it tells you who, type, & why the fast.
There are many reasons to fast: to draw closer to the Lord, direction or an answer to prayer, breaking of besetting sins...etc.
A fast can be just giving up ONE thing you really enjoy not necessarily food, say the computer for 3 days.
Another way is to give up something like sweets, soda, breads, etc....one day a week for a period of weeks.
Always using that time in worship and prayer during the fast.
Some answers will be immediatly apperent others may take time to see results, no fast is in vain.

Lent, the days from Ash Wednesday to Easter, were traditionally days of fasting. Christians in general have moved away from heavy fasting, but many still go without meat during this time. Every Friday was also a day of fasting in memory of Good Friday. Christians sometimes fast as a form of prayer for people in the world who have too little food.

Before you fast you need to prepare your body by slowing down on certain foods..Like you can go on fasting of just water but only for a few days,,fast where you take away a certain food you really like...It has to be something you will miss,,and don't people you are fasting it isn't worth anything if you do it to gain remorse from people..

Fasting should have no ritual process. Fasting should simply be abstaining from things in everyday life to gain closeness with God.
Fasting does not only include food, but things like TV, Internet, etc.
