That song with Bon Jovi earlier this year ("Who Says You Can't Go Home") really struck a chord with me. I have been living in the big city. I've reached the top of my career and met all my goals. I've been away from "home"--- my family and hometown for two decades. I really feel like I want to go back, but something is holding me back. I feel like I'm "selling out" if I go home. I feel like I will not be seen as successful if I return home to my small town. Should I go home? What are people's thoughts about this dilemma?

Oh my goodness! You only live once, if your heart is telling you to go home, then go home. I know exactly what you mean when you say 'you're worried you might not been seen as successful....but someone once said 'A major part of being successful is being happy...and that is sooo true.

You are successful, it would not mean suddenly because you changed your lifestyle that you become you become unsuccessful.

Look, ask yourself this; At the end of your life, would you be glad that you went home or would you wish that you'd stayed away?

The other thing that struck me is where you say 'I have reached all my goals' Think about that. Have you really? Or do you just mean career wise? If career then maybe home is your decision.
But you have so many more things to do in your life and they don't always have to be career.

Remember a job is not the sum of a person, it is really a very small part.

Good luck in whatever it is you choose.

You are a different person than you were 20 years ago, and you should refigure what your definition of success is. While it may have been achievement in a career sense, it may have focused to more around family.

You've been in that life for 2 decades, and changing it to something so different may not be what makes you happy. You may go home and be restless, missing your 'top of career' status.

You should take a week or two and go home, emerse yourself in it, weigh the pros, cons, what your future would hold in each environment etc, and then go back to the city to make your decision.

Maybe all you need is a break or reconnect. Or maybe your priorities have shifted to more relationship based. Feel it out.

Good luck!

I think 20 years is way to long to be without family and friends you should go visit and if your heart tells you to give it up analyze it and weight the choices on leaving the big city behind and settling back in the country
