I may be related to royalty quite far back in my family line but that doesn't me me any more important or special than the average Joe. I think it's what you do in life that makes a difference.

Well you may look at it this way: You can not call yourself a teacher and get the privileges of the teachers lounge if you are not a teacher or you can not go into a doctors office and start handing out medical advice if you are not a doctor: When you get elderly,or you are an authority figure or royalty you have generally earned your right to have that title bestowed upon you. yes everyone is equal but the fact remains is that we all look up to someone.

Unless you're in a caste system, no one is 'higher' in state in most Western industrialized countries. However , it is generally accepted as a term of 'respect' to treat leaders like the president, the queen etc with respect and deference. The same with people who are elderly.
We should really treat all people in a dignified manner with respect and kindness. No one is more superior and no one inferior. Old standards of a bygone era that shouldn't be continued.

Our elders should have our respect. They have more life experience than most. So Yes I hold them high on my list. The people I respect second most, are the ones who work hard for what they want and share with those who don't have and aren't as lucky as some. People who can enjoy life.

Anybody 60 and over is considered an elder and must be given the utmost respect. Anybody old enough to be your parent (at least 20 years older than you) should be respected by you.

Although everyone is equal in rights to work, food, housing etc . . . many elders and such are 'higher' in knowledge and wisdom so are more respected.
It is by our deeds / behaviors that we differentiate ourselves. (become greater or lessor)
