The only DNA testing that is dependent on you being anything other than female is Y - Chromosome testing. While some people are using y-chromosome testing to help determine origin, but in there are many ways to get at the questions of origin. For instance, Mitochondrial DNA is actually a much better way to determine origin in many cases.

Mitochondrial DNA is passed on only by women. (Men have it as well, they get it from their mothers but do not pass it on as sperm have very few mitochondria compared to eggs). Since both sexes can be tested it is also a bit more realistic to use for genetic testing.

Using mitochondrial DNA (especially non-coding regions such as the D-Loop) is a great tool for determining ancestral origin. This is, in a sense, what molecular anthropology is all about.

In the end, there are many ways to determine origin, beyond mitochondrial and Y-chromosome testing, there are also analyses of STRs (short tandem repeats) and other methods based on nuclear DNA, which has no bearing on your sex.

So, the answer to your question is: Yes! Your DNA can be tested to determine your ancestral origin. You do not need to be male unless you are talking only about Y-Chromosome testing and that is very limited anyway.

It is the other way around. Female DNA can be traced from generation to generation.Female DNA stays intact if you trace Female to Female. You could tell that if you have the DNA from another female of a specific race somewhere in the world. Male DNA is assimilated and is not traceable but for a couple of generations if that.

The only way you'd know is to dig 'em up first! You need their DNA to compare with your DNA. A bit like they used Prince Philip's to compare with the Russian NicholasII and the Princesses not so long ago when they found them down a well. That was to prove who they were. But you don't know where your relatives are do you! You're putting the cart before the horse. find them first and then worry about DNA.

Hey Halloween Munchkins,

You can do it using the male, but there are also female DNA tests. Your brothers may be used in a surname test to tell where the surname genes originate, and tie to research in that name.

Or you can participate in the global projects. To learn more, visit some of these sites.

Yes. Each individual's DNA can tell a story about its origin. Sometime back on National Geographic, they talked about a project on human genome which exactly did what you are asking.

In fact, they were looking for volunteers also and if am not wrong, by paying some fees, you could receive their kit whereby, you submit blood samples which will be used to trace your origin.

Check on Google as well as National Geographic websites.

The DNA from a male line or that from a female line does not alter. That is why in the human genome project our ancestry was traced back in time to somewhere in Africa. That makes the entire human race , insome way, related. Thats mind boggling.

It doesn't matter whether you are male or female when it comes to DNA, as long as you have something to match it too you should get the same results.

I think you could do it. I'm no expert, but I do know that there is something passed along in DNA that only goes through the females or the maternal line, so I would assume that your ancestry could be traced back.
