Most of the recipes above are for dough to keep for a couple of weeks. If you don't mind not keeping it use as much flour as you want to and mix with water until you have the consistency you want.
That fun gunge stuff is what I call Gloop and all it is, is cornflour mixed with a little water. Fantastic stuff - hard when pressure is applied and liquid when left. Very messy but great textures to explore. To make any dough different add different textures. Put rice in it, or sand, or dried lentils or dry pasta. Lots of things to do!
Have fun!

2 cups plain flour
1 cup salt
2 t spoons of cream of tartar
2 tbl spoons of cooking oil
food colouring
2 cups of BOILING water
add the above ingredients into a bowl adding the water last.please note it has to be boiling.Mix with wooden spoon until your arm is tired then take out as much as you can with your hands(bearing in mind it will be hot) and knead it till it is smooth.
Carry on kneading it throughtout the day till it is cold then it can go in an airtight container.
If it feels sticky then put it in the microwave for a few seconds at atime, this will improve the texture. it should last 6 weeks at least.
Cornflower is a good messy tactile experience
you will need

Just add cold water and mix well
In you clenched hand it should be hard and crumbly, when you open you hand it should be runny.

4 cups flour
1 cup salt
4 cups water
8 tablespoons oil
Adding more salt won't hurt (it stops the little blighters from eating it!)
Mix it all together and knead until soft. If you want to colour it, add food colouring with the oil.
Keep it in the fridge, to keep it fresh.
Have fun!
