I adopted two 8 week old kittens from the shelter on Thursday night. A beautiful male and his gorgeous little sister. By Friday morning they were both sneezing so I took them to the vet immediately. The little boy was sicker than the other as he also had watery eyes and a fever. The vet did tests for Feline Leukemia on both and they were negative. Phew! She sent me home with Clamavox and some deworming medication. They are both eating medi-cal development dry food and drink a lot of water. Today the boy is very congested and is open-mouth breathing sometimes. I am cleaning their noses and eyes with warm water and take them to my steamed up bathroom for a few minutes when he is very congested. Should I be doing anything else to help them? Any help is much appreciated. Thank you.

Hi!
I took the kitties to Vet Emergency Clinic and they told me I was just being paranoid.
Baby boy was just congested and I needed to give the meds time to work. Today they are both doing well and should probably be 100% by the weekend. So most of you guys were right. Thank you for your responses and kind words.

if the vet says its just a cold then don't worry they should get over it. just keep them warm and fed and give them thier medicine. make sure they have lots of water. when they come from the shelter they tend to have a lot of problems. my cat had 3 parasites and conjunctivitis in her eyes when i got her. she was sooo sick. but after awhile she got better with the medicines from the vet..

It sounds like you are doing an outstanding job of cat mama and I cannot think of a thing that you could do other than what you are doing. I have two kittens that I raised from about 2 weeks old (their mama died) I remember being worried about the goo in their eyes that did not seem to want to go away (it was like an infection almost) so I kept cleaning their eyes out and eventually their eyes cleared up and they have not had it since (they are 3 and a half months old now and eating like lil pigs!)
Perhaps the meds need more time to work...if it is still worrying you tomorrow you can call your vet to see what they think and if you kittens need a different type of medicine...good luck to you and your kitties...they are two lucky furry babies to have such a caring mom as yourself!

The open mouth breathing is not a good thing but sounds like you are doing everything you can. If the steam treatment don't resolve his issues he may need more veterinary care. Make sure they keep eating and drinking as you said and that they get the clavamox as directed for the period of time the doctor told you to do so. You can always call your vet to apprize them of the status of your kittens so they can recommend further treatments.
Good luck, you're going to make an excellent pet owner!

I would definitely take them to another vet to get a second opinion. Even if the first vet ruled out Feline Leukemia, there are many other diseases out there that obviously the shelter did not detect, of if they did, (which I really believe they knew that these kittens were sick) they really didn't take care of them properly and the way that these little babies deserve. Don't wait! Take them to another vet immediately for a second opinion.
Best wishes and I hope you kittens get better real soon.

I called the vet back and report that the symptoms are still there, and may be getting worse. He will tell you to bring it back in for a visit. You should do that. You did the right thing the first time, by taking it to the vet. Now go do the right thing the second time too. It will be worth it.

Your kitten needs another trip to the veterinary clinic ASAP. Consider calling an emergency clinic if it is after hours wherever you are right now. Open-mouthed breathing with congestion is a bad sign. The kittens should be noticably improved by now if all they had was a simple viral upper respiratory infection.

When cats have the upper resp. virus they do go thru all of what you mentioned. I just went thru this and in addition to the clavimox the vet perscribed appetite pills. When they have difficulty breathing they can't smell the food thus they don't eat. I don't know if age is a factor with the administrating these pills. You could ask. I also had a diffuser going with a few drops of Eucalyptus day and nite. Hop this helps

Call the vet tomorrow and let them know how things are going. Sometimes they want to change the medication, but it can take 5 days before you are seeing improvement.
