Well..Los Angeles is a big city. And no, not all people go to the beach all the time. L.A. is not as "superficial" as people think. There are many celebrities that reside in Los Angeles--maybe they're the ones that give L.A. a bad name.. (e.g. Paris Hilton, etc.) But there are normal people here too...
If you live in the San Fernando Valley, South L.A., East L.A., downtown L.A., or parts of West Los Angeles, you don't really have close beach access AT ALL.
For example, don't expect to be anywhere near the beach if you're in Beverly Hills. BH is only good for shopping...
Traffic sucks though..
But for the most part, L.A. is warm. Even near the beaches it's around 70-80 degrees at least...
L.A. beach towns include Santa Monica, Malibu...but not a LOT of people live near there. Most beach towns are $expensive$ to live in...especially in Los Angeles. For example, the average price for a house in Malibu is around $2.5 million. Even small condos near the beach in Malibu are above 1 mil.
...So most people in L.A. have to drive 30-45 minutes to the beach.

LA is great. I've lived here most of my childhood and some of my adult life.
Weather is great. Some say Hawaii is better but Hawaii is too humid for me. For me good weather = You don't sweat.
The mornings and nights are cool and if you're gonna be outside you should take a parka or some kind of sweat shirt but during the day you can be in your T-shirt and jeans.
The life style is I guess slower than most big cities like NY and Chicago. LA is spread out and not too concentrated in one area so whereever you go you'll find ghettos, suburbs, shopping district and business district.
My opinion on LA is that there is a lack of foot traffic so there's a chance of you getting mugged anywhere if it's dark and you're walking. Doesn't matter how safe the neighborhood is. So that's one thing I hate about this place.
More people walking means less chance of crime on the streets. At least that's my understanding....
I go to the beach once a month I guess.
See the sunset, eat at a nice restaurant by the beach, take a walk etc. But do I go down to the sand? Not really. Do I swim in the water? very rarely. Only people at the beach swimming on a regular basis are the kids and the surfers.
Anyway, if you're looking for sushine, then give it a go.
But I recommend Hawaii this time of year. I was there last weekend and it was awesome.

Everything you've heard about Los Angeles is true. Even the lies (no, I take that back, especially the lies). The place is so diverse that it really does depend on being in the right/wrong place at any given time...
It is absolutely gorgeous on a clear day, and disturbingly ugly when the smog settles in. Crime can happen to you on the first day or never become a factor at all. It can be glamorous and depressing at the same time. It's home to the very rich and the very poor alike. It is the land of Disneyland and swimming pools, but also the land of the ghastly Third World strip malls and chickens in the backyard. Whether you like L.A. or not is largely up to your particular experiences, in other words. There are no "objective" measures of consequence.
With that in mind, I would say IMO L.A. is generally much warmer than Chicago. Though there are winter rain storms, and the breezes coming in from the Pacific can turn 90s into 60s-70s in a hurry. As for the beaches, most Angelenos don't go to the beach all the time (they have work).

No matter what people say about California, I LOVE it! so many things to do! we have the deserts, the beach, mountains, we have las vegas very close by, and a lot of things to go to. It has a great weather and it barely rains. It's always sunny. The downside, it has a lot of pollution. Regarding the superficial people as everyone points out, there is a little bit of everything, and i think superficiality is everywhere. But that's not a concern, it doesn't affect me at all. You can find great people as well.

As far as the weather it's one of the best places to live, though lately it's bee out of whack, (that's what global warming is doing to the world) As for the place it's absolutely one of the best, you have so many options, we have the mountains as you know, beaches, lakes, we have the snow 2 hrs away, I don't think people go to the beach all the time, as for people though other answerers say people are not superficial, (not true)
People in L. A are some of the most superficial, rude, shallow people any where, that is the part I really don't care for, and it's not about celebrities, it's spread out, people have become nastier and more rude. If you end up visiting you'll see for yourself. Not trying to discourage you, but just telling you the truth.

I actually havent been to an LA area beach in years--and I've lived here most my life. I guess it's just one of those things you take forgranted. I do go down to Disneyland more than people regularly do though.
It's not always warm, although many would laugh at what we consider "cold". And I guess that's valid--but to me, anything below 63 degrees is COLD!

Most people are too busy working to pay the mortgages and rent to spend much time at the beach. If you have wealthy relatives where you can stay & won't have to work, then you could hang at the beach. And yup, it is usually warm, which is why so MANYYYYY people are willing to pay $500,000 and up for housing !
