I agree completely Luci--I'm not sure how I lived, walking on eggshells, concerning myself with every sinful and wicked thought--worrying about every teeny tiny little sin in the bible, when they are all in human nature to do--I am so glad I ditched that big book of thou-shalt-nots and got out into the real world of genuine love and acceptance--I pity the hidebound souls who are still entrapped in that gothic horror of opression, bigotry, and whalebone corsets

It is a human tendency to mingle the philosophy of man with the scriptures, and when people do that they will usually find peace and harmony because they have just somewhat altered the truth and added their personal flavor! However, only "real" truth can set you free, if you think you have found it.

I believe that I have more peace in my life without the Bible. It doesn't mean that I do not believe in God, it means that I do not take literally a book that is written by people. One should remember that the Bible was not written by either God or Jesus, so it is not the perfect record of what they had done or said. And even if it was, there's possibility that people either would or have edited it to suit their own ends. Especially when a country or region is influenced by the church.

I'm a Pagan, following my own version of spirituality. I still have a couple of Bibles around, and refer to them occasionally. Not because I'm seeking the Christian God, but because, like many ancient books, such as the Egyptian Book of the Dead and others, the Bible has a good amount of Wisdom.
The Psalms, Proverbs and the Gospels do tell incredible stories that we could all learn from.
That said, I don't think that a blind faith in ANY book, revering it as the Word of God is a healthy attitude. That's what brings about wars and fighting. Claiming to have the one and only way brings many people to a position where they become hostile to those who believe other things.
So, I've found peace, but not by rejecting the Bible, but by placing it equal with other inspiring texts, and by not having to hold it up as the ultimate source of authority.

I think your problem is that you expected peace, harmony, and love from the Bible. It is within the pages of the Bible we are told of how Christ died for us. It is through Christ we find peace, harmony, and love, not specifically, the Bible. You can be told of Christ without the Bible. Also, I hope nobody where you went to church told you that life as a Christian would be peace, harmony, and love. Quite the opposite will happen as the spiritual warfare unfolds over your soul. The peace you get from Christ is in knowing that you will dwell with Him in eternity, not here on Earth. I am curious though, what secular source tells you to love your neighbor as yourself? Your question reminds me of liberal thinking when it comes to the war on terrorism. Hey, if we just give up, we'll have peace, love, and harmony. To an extent, they're right. When you're a Christian you are a warrior against evil and evil will fight you. When you hang up your Bible (sword), the enemy wins and you feel a faux peace.

I whole heartily agree- I escaped the evil clutches of Christian dogma and I have been able to explore other religions, including Christianity objectively without the fear of punishment. When people wonder why I am so weird, I can explain it with an anecdote from my past. Growing up, bible school convinced me that I had a guardian angel who was ALWAYS with me, protecting me from the devil who was ALWAYS with me trying to lead me into temptation and I all of this was ALWAYS being watched by God. It is amazing I wasn't afraid to do anything with all of these people constantly WATCHING me!

Not only do I have peace ,but also a self-esteem .
I was not brought up believing that I already sinned .
My parents taught us right from wrong and how to care for others .
They did expose us to religion but did not pressure us to believe.
My Dad was Catholic and Mom was Jewish . My Father was excommunicated because he married a Jew .
Still he went to chuch .My Mom went to the synagog and practiced her religion .What we saw was the LOVE they had for one another .God did not create that ,THEY DID.
My Brothers and I learned that love really is the answer to peace and harmony .not following a certain religious text.

I live by God's word, the Bible, and believe every word of it from the begining to the end. So I cannot even begin to relate to what you are talking about.
