Soak the affected foot in hot-as-you-can-stand-it water with Epson Salts dissolved in it. This is an old-time recipe used by many folks (and knowledgeable doctors) to alleviate pain and "draw" yucky stuff out that we can't see. I'm glad your doctor didn't advise cutting it out at this point. One gets an ingrown toenail, usually, but not cutting the nail straight across. If you round it as you might a fingernail, it does just what comes naturally, and it grows into the corner you'd just handed it. If the pain persists before the nail has grown out before it can be cut across (and I'd suggest you have a professional do that for you for the first time so you can see exactly how it should be done) then I'd go back to your doctor and explain what you've tried and that it's not working. Some ingrown toenails are so involved nothing but cutting them out will cure them.

i had an ingrown toenail a few years ago. you can try to dig the toenail out but this is more painful than leaving it. i had my toenail dug out at the doctor and they fixed it on the sides so that it will never happen again. so far six years later it hasn't.

being a nurse i would have to say trying to cut a notch in the top mid section of the toenail in the shape of a V the toe nail will grow back and want and pull closer leaving that area to less likely be infected again.

The first person is right, a Dr. has to cut it out. My friend had one, it hurt her really bad, as did the treatment, but she was so relieved to have it taken care of after that. Go soon, before it gets worse or gets infected.

If you can't get it yourself then you will have to go in to the doctor and have it cut out. It sucks and hurts but if it grows to far in it can be a pain to cut out.

Dig it out. if it continues to come back, then doctors will have to elimate the nerve in that area, so they never come back there.
