Just curious, if you ask medical questions on here, do you take the advice from the people on the web, or do you contact your doctor for advice? And, if you do just take the advice of the people, do you look up your symptoms on a site like webmd?

Some people are not rich enough to take their dogs to the vet and may not be well enough informed to tell whether to take their dogs to the vet or not. And many of the things they write about don't need a veterinary visit, but some simple training, or 'clean-up' even if it is a 'medical' problem. And yes, people do TRUST others who give answers, and there are several answers, and usually there is one answer that is better than all the others ... but without this forum, the person would have NO answers ... and THAT is why people ask medical questions about their dogs. You ought to see the medical questions people ask about themselves or other people ... those are much more 'sensitive' and many people do need to see a doctor ... but many people are afraid, or can't afford to go unless it's absolutely necessary ... so give these two areas a 'pass' if you want to think these people are 'stupid' or 'ignorant' ... but even those who are ill informed deserve the best answer possible ... including you and your question here.

I think we do it because these days you get about 5 minutes with a Dr. and you have to try to get all the answers in that time. It's nice to be able to find others with the same concerns, who can empathize with us, and also sometimes offer non-medical advice that is helpful in making us feel we're taking an active role in our health care.
