forgot to mention, other cats are coming through our catflap

I have the same problem too. It is impossible for me to get one of those magnetic cat flaps as I have seven cats who come and go. All I can do is to block the cat flap for the night, once I know my own cats are safely inside. However, some of them want to go out again when I am asleep so they go mad trying to open the flap. Sigh. What I do now is remove all food at night (I used to leave a bowl of dry food out at all times for late-comers) I block the flap for a few hours but if one of my cats wants to leave, I unblock it again for a while. This has helped a little because the intruder cats haven't yet discovered when the flap is blocked or open again, and should they sneak in, there is no food for them so it becomes a futile exercise. When I go to bed, and one of my own is still outside, I block the flap anyway. This used to make me feel horrible, but we are learning to deal with it. Once or twice, I recognised the voice of my own cat demanding to be let in, so I got up and let it in. But usually they accept the fact that if they choose to go out, they will have to stay out until morning, and they are fine. They don't want the intruders anymore than I do.
Luckily I am at home most of the day, as I work from home. Then I can control the situation in a better way.
I empathise with you and hope to find a good solution from the answers you get. Am putting this question on my watch-list!

We bought a cat spray and it so doesn't work. Spray the cat with one of those spray bottles you get from the garden centre for around £1, then through it out in the cold. Harmless, they can go to their own house to get warm if they need to, but unpleasant enough to a cat. We use a spray to stop our kitten from scratching the furniture and he runs away at the sound even if it doens't hit him ( you don't live in Cheltenham do you? Our cat was brought back twice by our neighbours the other day cos it was scaring their cat!)

Make sure your windows and doors are screened or kept shut. If you must have a cat flap, make sure it's the kind that requires a special collar so only your cat can open it. Never leave catfood outside, train your cat to come inside to eat.
Check your foundations, there may be gaps they can squeeze through into your house or basement.

You really need to gave people more information about your problem to get a correct answer. If you mean they are coming though you cat door, you can go to a pet store and get a door that will let your cat go out when it want , but you will have to let it back in. I know this does may solve you problem and make another, but i would rather have to open my door to let a cat in then have other people animal in my hose

close the doors and windows...how are they getting in?

They have these really cool cat or dog flaps that will only open if the animal that is trying to get in is wearing a certain collar. You can also lock it completely or unlock it completely. You can get them at most pet store or at an online pet store. You could most likely just replace the cat flap you have with the new one!

Cats do not like water - they positively hate it. If you spray at them, with a very fine spray of water (that doesn't soak the cat - nor spoil your home's contents), each time they come near - they will very quickly get the message.

There's some green goo in a spray bottle I use to keep cats away from my garden and house, it's called "get out of my garden" or "keep out of my garden".
