Organic food is food produced according to organic standards, which means crops grown without the use of conventional pesticides, as well as artificial fertilizers or sewage sludge, animals reared without the routine use of antibiotics and without the use of growth hormones and food processed without ionizing radiation and without the use of a wide range of food additives. It is produced on all levels without the use of genetically modified organisms.[1] Historically, these farms have been small family-run farms.[2]

Once only available in small stores or farmers' markets, organic foods are becoming much more widely available. Organic food sales within the US have enjoyed 17 to 20 percent growth for the past few years[3] while sales of conventional food - while still larger in size - have grown at only about 2 to 3 percent a year. This large growth is predicted to continue, and many companies are jumping into the market.[4]

an organic food is one that is grown without chemicals, pesticides, or artificial ingredients. They are popular because they are better for you! They don't contain hydrogenated stuff, or artificial sweetners, etc. The only negative thing I can think of is that they're generally slightly more expensive, because they are grown in small batches since not enough people buy them to afford larger production. The positive facts abound. They have more nutrients because they haven't been processed. They taste fresher, more natural, and just better! And you know that when you eat organic foods, your helping your body be healthier.

txlady, I'm confused by your answer! the whole point of organic foods is that they don't have chemicals on them-you don't have to wash them as much as non-organic foods!!!

I believe that they are so popular becuase alot of weathly people as well as the famous eat them and alot of people just want to follow that trend.

Organic means that no artaficial chemicals where used in making them, organic meat is when nothing was used to make the animal produce more meat eggs etc and like organic fruits and veggies would mean that no pesticides where used.

(1) Organic foods come from earth.
(2) They're popular because organic food is lower in calories (no extras such as necessary preservatives, salts, etc. are added.). They're healthier--you can generally eat as much organic food as you wish.
(3) Positive: Refer to #2
Negative: Pesticides and fertilizers can detour many people from wanting them. Washing things such as green leafy vegetables several times--wash between the creaves and inside the green portion of scallions--will help this problem/concern.
