Does anyone really appreciate anything that is just handed to them? The more we work for something, the more appreciate it-citizenship included.

I would say no because the majority of born Americans do not serve their country. Sometimes the sworn in citizen is more loyal then the born citizen. My husband came a citizen not long ago. He asked me to help him study for his test. It was sad that he knew more about my country then I did. I think the average American is like that. So how can you expect someone to earn citizenship when those given it by birth don't have to. And its not like they come and get it right away. They have to live and work for a number of years in the US to get citizenship.

Depends on what is included in 'service.' Being responsible, productive members of society seems like a good way to earn citizenship. Teaching, social work, medicine, and so many more fields provide valuable services to our country every day.

Hmm, some people who want to be U.S. citizens do so by enlisting in the Armed Forces, taking citizenship classes, and the citizenship tests. When they meet the requirements for citizenship, they are sworn in as U.S. citizens.
