Such as, zu + der = zur. I realize in French they are, i.e. de + le = du. However, in English they are not. Thanks in advance.

no you dont need to say zur.zu der is considered better actually most of the times.zur is more coloquial.most of the you dont write zur

they are not obligatory as in french, if u dont make them it isnt strictly wrong but it doesnt sound that good. they re not so many so just learn them. depends on the contraction too, for instance zu der instead of zur is not as bad as in das instead of ins. that really sounds bad.

Jawohl, as far as I know they are.
My teacher corrects me when I say "zu der" (yeah right like I ever get the article right anyway).
