They did not have free will until they ate from the tree of knowledge. The ability to know good from evil, in other words free will, was the forbidden fruit of the tree of knowledge. Without knowledge that a choice exists there is no freedom of choice. Knowing about good and evil and being able to decide is the original sin.

Personalities change my friend. People change all the time and everyday. But obedience is not about personality differences its about appreciation and love. These are things that a perfect human is born with. Adam and Eve were perfect. They had a perfect inclination toward obedience and so life for them in the garden of Eden would have been easy. God designed them so that they would worship him out of love not compulsion. He gave them the choice. They chose selfishly. It's the same for us, we are imperfect and yet we can choose to be obedient.

good philosophical question. They had freewill like any other human being. their cognitive skills were not designed but were immanent from the spirit that God gave them for life. remember that spirit of God that was Put in Adam was never designed but was just there eternally

cognitive skills = environment + genetic
cognitive skills would not independently manifest their traits. these skills or attributes are reflective of brain thinking patterns mixed with environmental development.
What sets humans apart from other created creatures is EXACTLY the ability to make conscious choices outside of our personality and genetic traits.
Humanity's blessing and curse is our ability to BE random!

There's a difference between the ability to think (cognate) and the ability to choose (freewill).
Freewill means that we can choose to be with God or without God. It's our decision to make.

God gave them free will because he wanted them to choose for themselves to follow him. He wants us all to choose him. Had he not given us free will he would just have a bunch of zombies exactly the same. He made you the way you are because he likes uniquness, and when we get to heaven not one of us will ever be the same. It's God's will.
