it is not legal, because it is called piracy because you are literally pirating all the hard earned music that a musician makes for free. Plus I hear those programs give your computer viruses. I would advise to use itunes and pay for the song and give the credit the artists deserves, or get some music from a friend, because i tried limewire once and I downloaded this song but it ended up being the wrong song and it put a virus on my computer. I guess it was karma for me trying to steal. Plus I some of my friends got in trouble with the cops and had to pay a couple thousand dollar fine because they got caught all because they downloaded a cd when they could have paid 10.00$ on itunes! All in all, downloading music for free is stealing and unsafe. Good question.

It is absolutely legal to download music from morpheus, limewire, bittorrent, or Kazaa, or whatever future sharing software comes out.

HOWEVER- It is not legal to download copyrighted material without permission- this is what you are probably referring to. Many indie bands put their music on share sites to get publicity, however, if you see a free download for Elton John or Shakira, chances are you are stealing.

Nowadays, some of these programs require you purchase a license for certain artists- this covers you for legal downloading.

Technically speaking, yes it is illegal. Will you be caught, most likely not. Currently most people are caught by sharing files NOT by downloading them. I don't condone downloading files from P2P but as long as you in some form own the song in question then I see no problem with downloading it again.

Sharing files IS illegal and there is a much higher chance of getting caught by doing so.
