mucho frio it's usage when someone is talking oneself like for example tengo mucho frio.. but hace mucho frio it means as well about the weather hace mucho frio este dia.. and Muy frio it's usage in things or weather este dia es muy frio.. it's similar with the sentence hace mucho frio este dia.. are two ways to say the same sentence.. but muy frio it's more for thing.. like for example
la soda esta muy fria.. el caldo esta muy frio.. I hope this could help u

You use both according the circunstances for example:
This is a very cold day in spanish este es un dia muy frio
Today it is very cold in spanish hoy hace mucho frio
When you need a quality adverv you use muy
means quantity use mucho

you can use muy and frio together and it means very cold and mucho means much/alot and much cold doesnt sound right so yes you can use then them together
