do not follow the doctrine of christianity yet claim they are of that faith? Such as those who believe in reincarnation yet claim to be christian which does not support that. Or LDS and others who have a different doctrine yet insist they are christian.

I think Christianity is the Umbrella title for the believers in God and Jesus. It coveres all believers and their prospective religions. I don't think reincarnation is mentioned in the bible or many new age christian concepts of everything is OK religion that's popular. If it feels good do it, because Jesus would be OK with it cause he's a loving savior. All these new age doctrines aren't mentioned in the Bible........why do you suppose not? There's only one Word.

Christian is just a label....it can used by anyone, good or evil.

Despite Jesus's words of, "Love thy neighbor," there are Christians who spew hatred toward homosexuals, atheists, and scientists.

These people are simply jerks. And jerks are everywhere, including the communities of homosexuals, atheists, and scientists. You can always find a jerk, and the jerk may lay claim to being part of a group which makes that group groan.

As an excellent example, Fred Phelps is a huge jerk who claims to be a Christian. Most Christians really hate that he does this.

Oh yeah. Big time.
The most recent # i've heard is that 2 billion people worldwide identify themselves as "Christian" but who knows (other than God) how many of them really are.

it's a natural result of centuries of insisting Christianity is the only way to go.

Of course there are going to be permuations and lapses; that happens with any old "ism."
