If you keep the spoon and fork on either side of the plate(inside the plate) with the bowl side upwards, it indicates that you are not yet finished(and wants a little more of it!!!). If you keep them corossed on the plate with the bowl side down, it means that you are finished and the plate can be removed!!

I am a waiter AND I am french... So I should know...
You place the fork and spoon, side by side, on your plate, at the 4:30 hrs position... That is the way to get the waiter to take your plate...

Gee..All the different answers. I never knew there was a proper way, but like the 4:30 thing. Sounds like it would make it easier for the server to pick up your dirty plate
