Clear air, persecution has never dictated or controlled belief. Christian people were persecueted and killed for the first three hundred years of their religion. The same is true of many religions. Atheism is no different. Did you know Voltaire preceded the French Revolution?

Yes, probably only a dozen or two... However, before this time in History, religion wasn't exactly the life choice it is today. Being active in your church or faithful to your religion was as natural a part of life as internet usage is for us today. Shared faith was a community builder and a cause great enough for peoples and nations to unite under as opposed to the attitude by many that Christianity is an evil that is to be fought by the sacred swords of science... or however the religion of atheism has elected to write their own legends and myths.

A dozen or so known ones. ie. those who were famous enough and shouted it from the roof tops. But it still indicates that there were probably very few over all. About the number of Christians there were in the early days.
