No. Blu-Ray discs and HD-DVD's will not play on regular DVD players--they use a different type of laser and the data is packed more densely into them. DVD's, on the other hand, can play on Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players.
Re: Craig below--not all HD-DVD's are "combo discs" that have a DVD side and an HD-DVD side. Only a few titles are like that, and they're indicated as such on their packaging.

No unfortunatly you cant, and here is why:
The new format is called a Blu-ray Disc because a blue laser is able to cram more data onto discs than the red rays currently used. Your dvd player now uses a red laser to read and write data, when a disk wrote with blue rays is inserted then the red laser is to big and sees multiple lines of info that it cannot read resulting in a disk error. Dont worry to much for now though because the standard dvd will be here for some time to come and all the new movies will be avail on them for years to come(just like vhs did). More than 25 million DVD players have been sold since the format was launched in 1996, and the number of films sold on DVD in the UK more than doubled last year. The companies that have worked on it are Sony, Matsushita, Philips, Samsung, LG, Thomson, Hitachi, Pioneer and Sharp.
Hope this helps you

Nope you cannot. Only the HD Dvd's you can, as the HD Dvd's have 2 sides, one for HD the other for SD.
