Hi there again Freeda...both Mac OS 9.1 and Mac OS X are considered software versions not your actual computer. These are installed into your computer. Your machine is called a Mac and therefore is using the software version OS 9.1. Depending on which model your Mac is (for example, iBook, iMac, Powerbook, G3, etc) you may be able to upgrade to software version OS X (10.1 or higher).

The confusion we are having is in the word "software". All data on a computer is software as opposed to hardware, which means the nuts and bolts. Mac OS 9.1 is an operating system. If your question is "Can I install Mac OS X onto a computer that already has Mac OS 9.1", then the answer is probably. You get the answer to which computers will permit installation of OS X in your other question. Installing OS X doesn't cause any problem with using OS 9.1 so long as your Startup Disk Control Panel in OS 9.1 is version 9.1 or later. That is how you will conveniently restart into OS X after you are started up to 9.1
