You need to find music with a wide range of sounds. Popular acoustic and amplified music often falls into a narrow band of sounds. So stay away from pop, hip hop, and rock. I like all of these categories of music, but if you want to "shock and awe" you need to find range.
My two suggestions would be either Trance music, or Opera. Both have a huge range. Check out the group: Infected Mushroom. Truely shock, awe, and range!

Steely Dan, "Babylon Sisters" or Dave Matthews, "satellite".
These are used often by audio engineers.
