I believe that the Marines require recruits to call home as soon as they arrive at Paris Island, so that their family knows that they arrived safely. I had some Marines tell me that when in boot, the DI's required them to write home on a regular basis, and that there were certain times they were required to call home or write home. As far as I know, the AF basic trainees can call home as long as they are off duty. I think the Navy requires the same thing, but at times will restrict phone calls home, depending on where they are for boot. In the Army (Ihave been in for 23+ years), for Basic, during in processing time, you can make phone calls as long as you are not on duty, But when you actually start Basic, it is up to your Drill Sergeants discretion.

Whoever it was that answered that there is only one boot camp is right. The United States Marine Corps is the only branch of the military that still has boot camp...all others are called basic training. In the Corps there are no phone calls allowed for the entire 16 wks of training. Only letters may be written. As far as the other branches of the military I would not have any idea. Also, just to respond to the lady above who said that Marine Corps boot camp is just an extended Navy boot camp...This comment is plain ridiculous. The navy isn't required to do 1/10th the things that you'll do in USMC boot camp. In fact, they don't even really have to qualify with a weapon...basically just get to shoot an M9 (berretta f92 nine millimeter). The USAF and Navy have the easiest basic training of all the other military branches.

in basic training you do not get to make or get anything but emergency phone calls. Basis training you are extrordinarily busy for 8 weeks and really do not have time for a phone call until the end if you are lucky. Now that isn't such a long time. If these poplet that you speak of love each other they will still be together after that, if they do not then basic training will show it and they will move on.

I have known people who went through Army bootcamp and Navy bootcamp and both went pretty much the same way. No calls, no contact with the outside world.
Oh, and Marine bootcamp would be pretty much the same as well, because they just go through an extended version of Navy bootcamp.

Outside of a serious family crisis, the Marines shut recruits off from the outside world totally!! The other three may allow them to call, but their time to talk is very limited. Keep in mind, they are trying to get them into the military mindset, and seclusion from their normal environment plays a major part in the processing.

each recruit divison must earn priviledges like phone calls and down time. so what one person experiences could be very different then someone elses who is going through a week later.
I didn't get any phone calls when mine ws in Navy Boot camp, but a friend of mine, whose DH went through at a different time than mine did, got several phone calls.

It depends upon the branch. I was in the Air Force and at bootcamp we got to make calls, it took a week or so, but we did.

Coming from a Marine you only make one phonecall when you arrive at parris island. Then you may be permitted to make a phone call home by your drill instructors if you do something extrodinary like walk on water, and this depends from drill instructor to drill instructor. lother services are more leniant

My hubby only got to call me once from bootcamp (USMC), but i've heard of other people getting more phonecalls from Parris Island. It all depends, really. I've heard they let you earn the right to use the phone, but it's hard to do!
